Engagement bait rules: 'comment YES', follow for follow and like goals

The short answer

Asking for likes, comments, tags or follows just to get them makes a post reach fewer people on most platforms; Facebook says a specific call to action is fine.

  • Facebook shows 'like if' and 'tag a friend' posts lower, Instagram leaves engagement bait out of recommendations, and LinkedIn doesn't recommend 'Like if you agree!' posts.
  • TikTok keeps like-for-like and follow-back bargains off the For You feed, and X cuts the reach of follow-for-follow schemes.
  • It can hurt more than reach: X doesn't pay creators who keep telling viewers to like, repost or follow, and YouTube removes sub-for-sub offers.
  • Snapchat holds back 'wait for it' moments that never pay off and 'if this gets 20,000 likes' promises.
