The hashtag rules, in the platforms' words
Too many hashtags isn't only a length problem. Here is what each platform says about them.
- Instagram
More than 5 hashtags
“Instagram will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five.”
Source (a report): socialsamosa.com/news-2/instagram-hashtags-five-per-post-10923075 (opens in a new tab) - YouTube Shorts
More than 60 hashtags
“If a video or playlist has more than 60 hashtags, we'll ignore each hashtag on that content. Over-tagging may result in the removal of your video from your uploads or from search.”
Official source: support.google.com/youtube/answer/6390658 (opens in a new tab) “posting with excessive, unrelated hashtags in a single post or across multiple posts”
Official source: help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/authenticity (opens in a new tab)“Content or actions that explicitly ask for likes, shares, comments, or follows. Examples include reaction-vote polls (e.g. “Like if you agree!”), tagging for attention, unrelated sharing requests, posts exaggerating information, or adding irrelevant hashtags.”

Caption length questions
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
2,200 characters. Only about the first 125 show before "... more", so put the hook up front. Instagram is also rolling out a cap of 5 hashtags per post, and a caption can tag up to 20 accounts.
How long can a TikTok caption be?
4,000 characters when you post in the TikTok app. Scheduling apps that post for you are held to 2,200. About the first 100 characters show before "more".
How many hashtags can I use on each app?
Instagram: 5 per post. YouTube: up to 60; over that, YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video, and up to 3 show by the title. Threads: 1 topic tag per post. TikTok, X, Bluesky, Pinterest and LinkedIn set no number, but unrelated or stuffed tags can count as spam.
How does X count characters?
X allows 280 per post (X Premium accounts up to 25,000). Every link counts as 23, however long it is, and emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as 2. The counter above counts the way X does.
How long can a YouTube Shorts title and description be?
The title can be 100 characters and the description 5,000 bytes: a plain letter is 1 byte, accented letters and emoji take 2 to 4. Neither can contain < or >. Up to 3 hashtags show by the title, and over 60 YouTube ignores them all.
What is the character limit on Threads and Bluesky?
Threads: 500 characters, with each emoji counted as its bytes (often 4), 1 topic tag and up to 5 links per post. Bluesky: 300 characters as you see them, so an emoji or a flag counts as 1.
How long can a Pinterest title and description be?
Titles can be 100 characters, and about the first 40 show in feeds. Descriptions can be 800 characters; Pinterest doesn't show them in the home feed or search.
What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
3,000 characters. About the first 140 show before "...see more", so lead with the point.
Is my caption saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent until you press "Check this caption against the rules", and the check doesn't keep it either.
