Black bars, low resolution and slideshows: Reels, TikTok and Snapchat rules

The short answer

Bars, borders and blurry re-saves get videos shown less: Instagram makes bordered, silent, mostly-text and low-resolution reels less visible, and Snapchat keeps letterboxed, horizontal, silent or blurry videos out of Spotlight.

  • TikTok says blurry bars shrink your subject and give away that the video came from another app.
  • Slideshows and loops lose money: Facebook won't monetize static images, slideshows or loops, and TikTok's Creator Rewards excludes split screens, empty reactions and slide videos.
  • TikTok also lists 1080p or higher for its Additional Reward.

TikTokBelow 1080p limits the Additional RewardDemonetizationVideo resolution below 1080p. TikTok lists '1080p or higher' right after the Additional Reward criteria; it does not say a lower resolution blocks the Standard Reward.Fix: Export at 1080x1920 (vertical) or 1920x1080 (horizontal) or higher.
“And finally, ensure your videos are 1080p or higher.”
TikTok, Creator Academy: What videos are eligible for Creator Rewards Program?
TikTokBlurred or black bars around landscape footageLandscape footage posted in a vertical frame with blurred or black bars, or text placed in the bars.Fix: Crop into the subject with tracking, or post a true horizontal video; for gaming, podcasts or reactions use a full split screen.
“Blurry bars shrink your subject into a small box. Viewers can't see what you're doing, so they keep scrolling — and the bars are the giveaway that the video came from another app.”

“Content that loops and displays the same segment multiple times.”
