Copy of a video already on Instagram

Instagram may leave the video out of recommendations, so fewer people see it.

What triggers it

Re-uploading a video identical to one already on Instagram; Instagram recommends only the original, replaces the copy and may add a label linking to the original creator.

What Instagram says

“when we find two or more identical pieces of content on Instagram, we will only recommend the original one.”

How to fix it

Post your own footage, or transform the clip (voiceover, reaction, remix) and credit or Collab with the original creator.

Good to know

Applies when the original is relatively new and the audio/visual match is confident. Material edits are exempt: memes, parody compilations, new voiceover, reaction remixes.

Can FYProof spot it?

A full check of your video looks for it in what's shown. What a check finds is an estimate, not a guarantee.

  • Video: looked at for this rule
  • Speech: not for this rule
  • On-screen text: not for this rule
  • Caption: not for this rule
  • Hashtags: not for this rule

It doesn't recognize songs or match clips against copyright catalogs, so it can't tell whether you have the rights to them.

Platforms change their rules often. This page sums up what Instagram publishes; it isn't legal advice.
