Muted audioHow serious: Worth fixingInstagramCopyrighted music

What triggers it

Recorded music you do not have rights to, especially dense use of music or full-length tracks, music over a static image (a 'music listening experience'), or commercial/business use of music without licenses.

What Instagram says

“The greater the density of music in content, the more likely it may be limited (e.g., blocked, muted or ineligible for Music Revenue Share)”

How to fix it

Use short clips or licensed/royalty-free music from the in-app library, and always have a real visual component.

Good to know

Watch for full songs, back-to-back tracks, lyric videos or song over a still image. Meta prohibits commercial or non-personal use of music without licenses, so brand and business posts are the riskiest; the in-app licensed library and Meta Sound Collection are safest. Does not count: short licensed clips or royalty-free tracks under real footage.

Can FYProof spot it?

A full check of your video looks for it in what's shown. What a check finds is an estimate, not a guarantee.

  • Video: looked at for this rule
  • Speech: not for this rule
  • On-screen text: not for this rule
  • Caption: not for this rule
  • Hashtags: not for this rule

It doesn't recognize songs or match clips against copyright catalogs, so it can't tell whether you have the rights to them.

The same rule on Facebook and Threads

Platforms change their rules often. This page sums up what Instagram publishes; it isn't legal advice.
