How to Check a Video Before Posting: YouTube Checks, TikTok Content Check Lite and More
The built-in pre-posting checks on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, what each covers and misses, and a checklist to run before you hit post.

Most video problems are easier to fix before you post than after. Once a video is live, a removal can mean a strike, a muted track can kill the edit, and a missed disclosure can follow your account around.
The good news: platforms have built some checks into their upload flows. The catch: they each cover different things, and none of them covers everything. Here's what's available and what's left for you to check yourself.
YouTube: the Checks step
YouTube has the most complete built-in check. During upload in YouTube Studio, the Checks step runs (Upload videos):
- Copyright check. Looks for Content ID matches and lets you trim, replace or dispute before publishing.
- Ad-suitability check. For YouTube Partner Program channels. It's based on the self-certification answers you give about your video.
- Likeness detection. Runs in the background for enrolled creators, looking for altered or AI-generated faces.
YouTube says these results aren't final. Later manual claims or reviews can still happen.
Pro tip: upload as private or unlisted first and wait for checks to finish before going public. YouTube recommends it, and ad-suitability reviews can take up to 24 hours when a human reviewer is involved (YouTube Help). Uploading private first does not hurt the algorithm.
YouTube has also been testing a Community Guidelines pre-publish check with some channels, which it describes as "not a comprehensive check," according to Social Media Today.
Upload settings that matter:
- Audience ("made for kids" or not)
- Age restriction, if the video is for adults
- "AI use" for realistic AI content (YouTube Help)
- Paid promotion for sponsored content (YouTube Help)
What it misses: there's no built-in check for borderline content, recommendation eligibility, thumbnails or titles.
TikTok: Content check lite and friends
Content check lite checks a draft against TikTok's For You feed eligibility standards before you post (Creator Academy). It's web only: in TikTok Studio on the web, go to Settings and turn on "Automatic content check lite," or accept the pop-up when you upload. TikTok calls the result "only preliminary."
Other TikTok tools:
- Music copyright check. A toggle on the posting page in the TikTok Studio app and on the web. It warns you if a sound may be muted (Creator Academy).
- AI-generated content setting under More options, for realistic AI content. You can't remove it after posting (Creator Academy).
- Disclose commercial content for ads, gifts and your own business (Creator Academy).
- Account check after posting. In TikTok Studio > More tools, it scans your account and last 30 posts for restrictions, including posts not eligible for the feed (Creator Academy).
What it misses: content check lite is a preliminary check focused on For You eligibility, and it's not available in the mobile app.
Instagram and Facebook: no pre-post scanner
Meta doesn't have a pre-publish policy checker like YouTube's. The closest tools:
- Account Status (Profile > menu > Account Status on Instagram) shows whether your account and posts can be recommended, and why not (Instagram Help). It only flags post-level problems after posting, but it's worth checking before a big launch.
- AI label toggle at upload, for realistic AI video or audio.
- Paid partnership label for branded content (Meta).
- In-app music library and Meta Sound Collection, which are safer than music baked into your file. For recorded video, muting happens after posting (Meta Music Guidelines).
- Trial Reels, which show a Reel to non-followers first. That tests performance, not policy.
- The Edits app, which exports without third-party watermarks.
The gaps nobody checks for you
Even if you use every tool above, a lot falls through:
- watermarks from other apps
- engagement bait in your hook or caption
- spoken claims about health, money or products
- missing disclosures in the video itself (which the FTC and UK ASA expect, not just the toggle)
- things that are fine on one platform but restricted on another
- X, Threads, Snapchat, Pinterest and LinkedIn, which have their own rules
And platforms don't publish exactly how ranking works, so no tool can promise a video will do well. What you can do is remove the known risks.
Your pre-posting checklist
Content
- [ ] No other app's watermark or logo in the frame
- [ ] Borrowed footage has your own commentary or edits
- [ ] No threats, slurs, or personal info like addresses or IDs visible
- [ ] Health, money and product claims are realistic
Audio
- [ ] Commercial music added through the app's library, not baked into the file
- [ ] No heavy swearing, or you're fine with the consequences
Text
- [ ] No engagement bait ("comment YES," "follow for follow")
- [ ] Title and thumbnail match the video, without profanity or shock
- [ ] A few relevant hashtags, not dozens
Settings
- [ ] AI label on for realistic AI content
- [ ] Paid partnership or disclosure toggle on for sponsored or gifted content, plus "Ad" said and shown in the video
- [ ] Correct audience settings (made for kids, age restriction)
Platform checks
- [ ] YouTube: uploaded private, Checks finished
- [ ] TikTok: content check lite and music copyright check run
- [ ] Instagram: Account Status clear
One check for every platform
That's a lot to remember for every post. FYProof does the cross-platform part in one go. Upload your video, add the caption you plan to use, pick your platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Pinterest and LinkedIn), and get a plain report of what could get it removed, age-restricted, demonetized or shown to fewer people, where it happens in the video, the source rule, and how to fix it. Use it alongside the platforms' own checks, not instead of them. Results are risk ratings, not guarantees. FYProof is in free beta. Join the waitlist at https://fyproof.com.
